Why Is Strength Training So Important as We Get Older?
We often don’t think about our strength until everyday things start to feel harder.
As we get older, we naturally begin to lose muscle mass and strength. It’s one of the reasons things we once did without thinking can gradually start to feel more difficult.
But that doesn’t mean we simply have to accept becoming weaker.
Strength training gives us an opportunity to actively work on maintaining and building our strength as we age. At Living Stronger, we like to think of it as future-proofing your body.

It’s about so much more than lifting weights
Being strong isn’t about how heavy you can lift.
It’s having the strength to garden, travel, play with the grandchildren, get up from the floor and continue doing everyday things independently.
That’s why I lift weights. I want my body to keep allowing me to do the things I love for as long as possible.
Your reasons might be completely different, but that’s the important part. Find your reason for wanting to stay strong.
Your bones benefit too
Strength training isn’t only about our muscles. Weight-bearing and resistance exercise can also help support our bones, which becomes particularly important for women as we get older.
If you have osteoporosis, however, your training may need to be adapted. That’s why Living Stronger also offers a specialist Osteoporosis Programme to help women exercise appropriately and confidently.
You can start at any age
You don’t need to already be strong to start strength training.
Start with a weight and exercises that are appropriate for you, learn the movements and gradually progress as your confidence and strength improve.
Whether you’re in your 50s, 60s, 70s or beyond, it’s never too late to make your strength a priority.
Start getting stronger
We’re not trying to turn back the clock at Living Stronger. We want to help women get stronger now, so they can keep doing the things they love in the future.
If you’re new to weights, our Beginners Programme will help you learn the basics and start building your strength from home.
